Xiaojiu Shi
Back to Xiaojiu Shi's main page

Xiaojiu Shi, born in Beijing, China, grew up during the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution. Xiaojiu spent nine years of her youth and early adulthood in the countryside of Northeast China, first with her parents and then, like most of her peers, in a youth camp. It was a harsh life that included exhausting physical labor, severely limited living conditions and semi-starvation. It was also a time when Xiaojiu discovered the overwhelming joys of being close to nature, surrounded by birds, horses, cows and sheep.

Those early experiences enriched her soul and inspired her passions for nature, becoming an endless source of inspiration for her art. Since then, Xiaojiu has continued to explore the natural beauties of the world. She has left her foot prints in the Mongolian prairies, the snowy highlands of Tibet, the monumental red grounds of the American west, and over many national parks in the US.

Through her painting, Xiaojiu Shi composes a humble and intimate pastoral for her audience. Through her thick brush stokes and strong colors, one can feel her longing to free her spirit and return to nature. Her paintings reveal careful and attentive observations that come from tenderness for all natural subjects she depicts on her canvas.

Xiaojiu attended Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts. After completing her education there, she became a full time faculty member of the academy. During the next twelve years, she collected numerous awards and gained wide recognition for her work in China. Xiaojiu received her Master of Fine Arts degree in the United States and for many years she has taught art here, continuing to paint in San Jose, California.
